Pennsylvania vehicle owners should prepare for upcoming changes to vehicle registration fees set to take effect in mid-2025.
As part of Act 89 of 2013, PennDOT has announced its biennial fee adjustments based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), ensuring continued investment in the state’s transportation infrastructure.
Starting April 16, 2025, these changes will be reflected in renewal notices for registrations expiring in July 2025 or later.
Here’s a breakdown of the key updates affecting vehicle registration fees:
Passenger & Specialty Vehicle Fee Changes
- Passenger Vehicles: The standard registration fee increases from $45 to $48.
- Motor Homes: Registration fees increase as follows:
- Class 1: $83 → $88
- Class 2: $116 → $123
- Class 3: $149 → $158
- Motorcycles: Fee increases from $24 to $25.
- Motor-Driven Cycles & Mopeds: Fee increases from $10 to $11.
Truck & Trailer Registration Adjustments
- Trucks & Truck Tractors: Class 1 through Class 25 fees will be adjusted (see Form MV-70S for specific changes).
- Farm Vehicles & Implements of Husbandry: Adjustments apply due to their dependence on CPI-based truck registration fees.
- Trailers:
- Class 2: $14 → $15
- Class 3: $43 → $46
- Permanent trailers: $210 → $223
- Recreational & Cargo Trailers:
- Class 1: $14 → $15
- Class 2: $41 → $44
- Class 3: $108 → $115
- Permanent: $506 → $537
Bus & Commercial Vehicle Fee Adjustments
- Motor Buses & Limousines:
- Seating up to 26: $16 → $17 per seat
- Seating 27-51: $414 + $21 per seat → $440 + $22 per seat
- Seating 52+: $954 → $1013
- School Buses & School Vehicles: Fee increases from $42 to $45.
- Ambulance, Hearse, & Taxi Registrations: Fee increases from $98 to $104.
Business & Dealer Registration Changes
- Messenger Service – Annual Registration: $246 → $261
- Dealer & Miscellaneous Motor Vehicle Businesses:
- General Dealer: $66 → $70
- Motorcycle Dealer: $33 → $35
- Motor-Driven Cycle & Moped Dealer: $18 → $19
What This Means for Pennsylvania Drivers
These adjustments are designed to provide reliable funding for infrastructure improvements while keeping up with inflation. Although the increases are relatively modest, they contribute to maintaining the state’s roads, bridges, and transportation services.
PennDOT will begin accepting payments for renewals at the new rates starting April 16, 2025. Customers receiving renewal notices for registrations expiring July 2025 or later will see these updated fees reflected.
