Spring is finally here! For many of you, that means it’s time to dust off the boat, fire up the RV, and get back to the trails on ATVs and motorcycles.
But before you head out for your first adventure of the season, taking the time to properly prepare your recreational vehicles can save you from breakdowns, delays, and costly repairs.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get your outdoor equipment ready for a safe, smooth, and fun-filled spring and summer.
1. Start with a Thorough Inspection
After months of sitting idle, your vehicles need a full visual and functional check.
What to look for:
- Cracked hoses or belts
- Fluid leaks
- Rust or corrosion
- Rodent damage (wiring, filters, insulation)
- Tire wear or dry rot
Our professional truck drivers at our CDL School would be glad to hear that normal road drivers are being proactive like they are required to do every day!
Catching small issues early can prevent major problems once you’re on the road or water.
2. Review Registration, Titles, and Permits
Before heading out, make sure your paperwork is in order.
Verify:
- Registration is current
- Plates or decals are up to date
- Required permits are secured
Skipping this step can lead to fines or even being sidelined during peak season.
If you need help with registrations, plates, or permits, the CNS Licensing Center team is here to help you get road-ready quickly and correctly.
3. Update Insurance Coverage
Your usage may change seasonally, so your coverage should too.
- Confirm active policies
- Adjust coverage for increased usage
- Add any new vehicles or equipment
This is especially important for boats, RVs, and multi-vehicle setups.
Personal Insurance provides financial protection for individuals and families against unexpected events and risks, including insurance coverage for your car, ATV, boat, renter’s insurance, and more.
In Pennsylvania, insurance for ATVs, motorcycles, and RVs offers specialized coverage for accidents, damage, theft, and liability. These policies are separate from standard auto insurance and tailored to each vehicle type.

4. Check and Replace Fluids
Fluids break down over time, even when not in use.
Be sure to check:
- Engine oil
- Coolant
- Brake fluid
- Transmission fluid
- Power steering fluid
For boats and seasonal equipment, consider a full oil change if it wasn’t done before winter storage.
5. Inspect and Service the Battery
Dead batteries are one of the most common spring startup issues.
Steps to take:
- Check battery charge
- Clean corrosion from terminals
- Ensure connections are tight
- Replace battery if it won’t hold a charge
If you didn’t use a battery maintainer over winter, this step is critical.
6. Evaluate Tires and Pressure
Tires can lose pressure and develop flat spots during storage.
Don’t forget to:
- Check tire pressure and inflate to recommended levels
- Inspect tread depth
- Look for cracks or bulges
This applies to trailers, campers, and tow vehicles as well.
7. Test Lights, Signals, and Electrical Systems
Safety and road compliance both depend on proper lighting.
Check:
- Headlights and taillights
- Brake lights and turn signals
- Trailer wiring connections
- Interior electrical systems (for RVs)
Replacing a bulb now is much easier than dealing with it roadside.
8. Perform a Test Run
Before your first big trip, take everything for a short test run.
- Start engines and let them run
- Check for unusual noises or vibrations
- Test braking and handling
- Tow your trailer to ensure everything is secure
A short drive can reveal issues you won’t catch sitting still.
9. Stock Up on Essentials
Make sure you’re ready for the unexpected.
Pack items like:
- Emergency kits
- First aid supplies
- Tool kits
- Spare parts (fuses, bulbs, etc.)
Preparation makes all the difference when you’re miles from home.
10. Have fun!
Spring is all about getting back outside and making the most of the season, and this preparation goes a long way.
Taking the time to inspect, maintain, and properly register your recreational vehicles ensures you can focus on what really matters: enjoying the ride.
